Position Summary:The Bus Monitor plays a critical role in supporting a safe, orderly, and respectful environment on school buses. The primary responsibility of this position is to assist the bus driver in maintaining student safety and appropriate behavior while boarding, riding, and exiting the school bus. The monitor/aide also ensures compliance with district policies and provides assistance to students with special needs or other challenges.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Assist the driver in supervising students while on the bus to ensure safe and orderly transportation.
Monitor student behavior and reinforce positive behavior strategies in line with district discipline policies.
Assist students in boarding and exiting the bus safely, including those with physical or developmental disabilities.
Maintain accurate seating charts and support assigned seating arrangements.
Ensure that all students are properly seated and remain seated while the bus is in motion.
Address minor behavioral issues in a calm and professional manner; report major incidents to the Transportation Director and school administrator.
Communicate respectfully with students, parents, and school staff.
Remain alert and responsive to any potential safety hazards or emergency situations.
Assist in conducting emergency evacuation drills as required by state and district policy.
Maintain confidentiality and safeguard student information in accordance with FERPA and district policy.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation or designee.
Qualifications:Required:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to work well with children and maintain a calm, positive demeanor.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Willingness to complete district-provided training in student management, safety, and emergency procedures.
Preferred:
Previous experience working with school-aged children.
CPR and First Aid certification.
Experience working with students with special needs.
Physical Demands:
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
Ability to assist students in an emergency evacuation if necessary.
Work Environment:
Majority of time spent on a school bus in varying weather conditions.
Exposure to noise and potential student behavior challenges.
